What Recovery Means to Bel
"Recovery to me means freedom"
We're gathering stories from the SWEDA community and beyond, inspired by the prompt #WhatRecoveryMeansToMe. We’re building this series as a resource: something for people affected by eating disorders to read, that can support them and inspire hope, or just hear that they are not alone. We also want to raise awareness about how recovery is not a fixed or 'one size fits all' concept: it's something unique to each person and their own hopes for a life in recovery from disordered eating.
Bel B, nutritionist and Facilitator of SWEDA’s Finding Food Freedom course, writes:
Recovery to me means freedom.
Recovery to me means being able to listen to my hunger and fullness signals.
Recovery to me means not paying attention to diet and weight loss culture.
Recovery to me means not beating myself up if and when I make mistakes.
Recovery to me means living life to the beat of my own drum.
Recovery to me means enjoying and honouring my body for what it can do.
Recovery to me means creating new definitions of what I consider beautiful.
Recovery to me means not having food rules.
Recovery to me means enjoying food.
Recovery to me means nourishing my mind, body and soul.
Recovery to me means treating food with respect, and seeing food as my friend rather
than my foe.
Recovery to me means making peace with my hunger and appetite.
Recovery to me means making peace with my body.
Recovery to me means being a recovering perfectionist!
Recovery to me means forgiving myself.
Recovery to me means looking after my emotional health.
Recovery to me means offering kindness and compassion to myself, like I would to a loved one.
Recovery to me means witnessing my inner critic when it’s loud, and choosing to follow a different script.
Recovery to me means peace with food.
Recovery to me means freedom.
