SWEDA's excellence and effectiveness has been recognised by the Kings Fund (Kings Fund GSK Award Winners 2021) and by the NHS who have commissioned it to deliver preventative and post-treatment support with children, young people and adults in Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.
SWEDA led the development of REDCAN, an alliance of 8 eating disorder charities across the UK which aims to make it easier for people to find and access expert-by-experience help in their communities.
In Somerset, SWEDA is part of the Open Mental Health alliance of 21 charities and Somerset Council, working together to ensure people with mental health problems get the right help when they need it, and works closely with NHS and CAMHS/CEDS in Somerset who are best positioned to work with those who are seriously ill or in crisis as they can provide the necessary multi-disciplinary approach.
Our Support Workers work closely with local schools and colleges by visiting for assemblies, freshers’ fairs, and health events to raise awareness about eating disorders and body dysmorphia, and we offer in-college support sessions so that student clients can access SWEDA’s help directly.
In Bristol, SWEDA is a member of the BNSSG VCSE Mental Health Alliance. In Bristol, SWEDA’s services are hosted by Penny Brohn at its HQ in Pill and also at Queens Road in Clifton, and by Nilaari in Stapleton Road.
We are currently working with the University of West England to conduct research into the presentation and response to eating disorders in marginalised communities and we are working with Nilaari, the Bristol Somali Resource Centre, and Chinese Community Wellbeing Society to apply for funding to co-design services.
