"Recovery for me means to expand myself in ways I never imagined were possible. To become more than my thoughts, judgments, and the ideas of what I thought life would be.”
We're gathering stories from the SWEDA community and beyond, inspired by the prompt “What Recovery Means to Me”. We’re building this series as a resource: something for people affected by eating disorders to read, that can support them and inspire hope, or just hear that they are not alone.
This person wished to shared their thoughts and artwork anonymously.
"What Recovery Means to Me?
HOPEFUL, ENGAGING IN LIFE, FEELING ALIVE, SELF AWARE, EXPRESSIVE, RESILIENT.
Recovery for me means to expand myself in ways I never imagined were possible. To become more than my thoughts, judgments, and the ideas of what I thought life would be. To step into the unknown, to trust the process, to try something different. To learn to connect with and listen to my body, my feelings. To develop curiosity of who else I can become. To make connections with people who are nurturing to me, to be nurturing and compassionate to myself when I am not at my best or make a mistake. To be able to fully engage in life outside of me.
To create something I could feel proud of i.e. these pieces of art made of clay which represent the vehicles that human souls reside in temporarily, or items which serve us some purpose.
To support others who might need my support, to ask for support when I needed it, and to realise when I need it – know my own limitations, my own boundaries and to communicate them in a clear and gentle manner. To make a commitment and not to be fearful of letting go, to be less harsh on myself, to believe that I deserve more from life and that I am worthy of receiving more for the effort I put as I put my heart in whatever I do."
We have an open call for new contributions to the project. We want to create a vast library of perspectives on what recovery means to our community. If you’d like to share your interpretation of recovery, please get in touch with us at hello@swedauk.org.
