What Recovery Means to Zoe

What Recovery Means to Zoe

"Recovery to me is for a young person to see a connectedness to their future."

We're gathering stories from the SWEDA community and beyond, inspired by the prompt “What Recovery Means to Me”. We’re building this series as a resource: something for people affected by eating disorders to read, that can support them and inspire hope, or just hear that they are not alone.

Zoe is a Children and Young People's Therapist at SWEDA.

"Recovery, to me, means choices: to see a young person discover the choice to be well, and to find the courage and bravery to chose the journey to wellness.

To see their world expand with new possibilities, new adventures and a new thirst for enjoyment.

The act of being present.

To see a connectedness to their future, almost like it's gone from blurry and distant to clear and near. Witnessing that will never get old.

It’s to hear them find their voice and to be welcoming of finding joy and freedom. It means witnessing struggle and resilience with strength and determination.

It’s like an unveiling of a spark that’s been masked, like wings have been attached to them and they are ready to take flight.

It’s a feeling of joy to see another understand and see their worth, their importance and their possibilities.

Recovery means hope, it means choices and it means strength. It’s not a linear process, so supporting children and young people through this to understand triggers, to understand when self-care needs to be prioritised is vital, so their journey to wellness can be and is possible. It’s in these moments that choices are made, and strength is shown, and that recovery is happening. It’s a wonderful process to be part of."

The earlier we can get support to children and young people, the more likely serious illness can be prevented, and the more likely they are to fully recover.

Please donate to SWEDA’s Christmas Appeal so we can speed up support and help more children and young people in 2025. We simply can’t do what we do without support from people like you.
