Learn about creating a safe place for conversations about mental health in the workplace

It's important to break the silence around eating disorders

Eating disorders are serious mental health problems affecting an estimated 1.25m of the adult population in the UK (BEAT) which can have severe psychological, physical and social consequences for individuals and their families.  Although eating disorders often emerge in adolescence, they can affect anyone at any time. The pandemic caused a significant rise in incidences, hospital admissions for eating disorders increased by 84% in the 5 years to 2021 (BEAT). The Mental Health of Children and Young People in England report published by the NHS in October 2023 found that 12.5% of 17-19 year olds had an eating disorder, a huge increase from just 0.8% in 2017.

SWEDA staff are seeing a significant increase in demand from adults and children and young people, and increasingly complex cases. Early identification and intervention with rapid access to specialist care is crucial to improve outcomes and ensuring that behaviours do not become entrenched and therefore harder to treat (Treasure et al, 2005).

Session outline

This 45 minute session will be delivered by one of the SWEDA team, a qualified counsellor and experienced trainer who has delivered training and awareness raising to a broad range of audiences including counsellors, teachers, GPs and parents.

The session will cover;
1) What is an eating disorder and the most common types
2) What to do if you think you might be affected
3) How to support someone else who might be affected

There will be an opportunity for attendees to follow up privately with a member of our therapeutic team after the session.
