Emotional Processing in Bulimia Nervosa
Why are we doing this study? We want to improve our understanding of negative feelings and emotions experienced by those suffering from Bulimia Nervosa. People with eating disorders often experience high levels of negative feelings and emotion, but these are not always easy to change with standard treatments. Currently we understand very little about how the brain processes these kinds of beliefs and emotions in people with eating disorders. The aim of this study is to see whether women who have a current diagnosis of bulimia nervosa process emotions in the brain differently to women who do not have an eating disorder. Improved knowledge of emotional processing in the brain will help us to improve treatment for women with eating disorders Who is eligible to participate in the study? We are recruiting women aged 16 to 60 with a current diagnosis of bulimia nervosa to participate in the study. What does participating in the study involve? If you would like to take part in this study it will involve an initial meeting during which we would need to ask you some information about your age, education, psychiatric history, medical history, current treatment and your height and weight. After this we would arrange a second meeting which would involve having a brain scan during which we would ask you to perform some simple tasks. After the scan we would ask you to complete some further computer tasks and some questionnaires. This normally takes no longer than 2.5 hours We are able to offer volunteers some financial reimbursement for the time they spend on the study, as well as reimbursing travel costs. We hope that this research will improve our understanding of eating disorders and that this in turn will help to find more effective ways of treating the disorders. If you would be interesting in participating in the study please contact me, Abbie (abbie.pringle@psy.ox.ac.uk), and I will send you some more detailed information about the study without any obligation on your part. |
